Use the FieldScout GreenIndex+ Turf app to measure turf health via the chlorophyll content (relative greenness) of the turf. The app determines the DGCI (Dark Green Color Index), which is a number between 0 and 1 related to the chlorophyll content. GreenIndex+ Turf will display a Visual Rating, which can be customized to match your rating protocol. You must use the app with specific green and yellow color standards on a target board in order for the DGCI to be computed accurately.
To begin, point the camera at the grey area of the color reference board and tap the White Balance button to lock the camera’s white balance. Then it's as easy as:
1. Lay the color reference board on the ground and take a picture of the turf accompanied by the green and yellow areas on the board.
2. On the screen, tap the green and yellow standards and the turf to identify the areas to be analyzed. Move and resize the turf’s circle to get the exact area that you want.
3. Read the results: DGCI and Visual Rating. The rating scale can be customized and saved by turf variety.
Results are logged with time stamps and GPS information (if Location Services are enabled), and can be emailed for further analysis with other programs.
Averaging can be selected to combine multiple samples into a single computation, or to group related readings while maintaining the separate data values. Images can also be paired for comparison of different sections of turf.
Use the White Balance Lock feature to ensure accuracy in low light environments.
Requires a rear-camera-equipped iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad Mini, or iPad, running iOS 6.0 or later. For DGCI calculations to be accurate, pictures must include a color reference board with specific green and yellow standard color areas. GreenIndex+ Turf Boards are available from www.specmeters.com/GreenIndexTurf.
